Backyard Band

Get ready to join the insects in Backyard Band because in this week's Family Friday you will make your very own harmonica! Read our step-by-step guide on creating this musical instrument craft with everyday items. Have fun!

What you need:

  • 2 popsicle sticks
  • 1 straw
  • 1 large rubber band
  • 2 small rubber bands

Step 1

Click here for Backyard Band. You can find this book in your Footsteps2Brilliance app under Level 1 (Red) in the ALPS series. Read the book with your child. Be sure to touch the illustrations to see the pictures come alive, and record yourselves singing along!

Step 2

Wrap the large rubber band around one popsicle stick the long way.

Step 3

Cut two 2-inch pieces from the straw.

Place one straw piece between the rubber band and the popsicle stick.

Place the other straw piece above the rubber band.

Step 4

Place the second popsicle stick directly over the first popsicle stick and the straw pieces.

Step 5

Secure the two popsicle sticks together, with the straws in the middle, by tying a rubber band around each end. Now you are ready to rock and roll!

Blow into the space between the straws. Move the straws closer and farther apart to make different sounds.
