Ellie the Elephant

This week's Family Friday is fun for all ages. After reading Ellie the Elephant in our Alphabet Animals series, you will make your very own elephant ring toss! Read our step-by-step guide on creating this interactive ring toss game at home. Have fun!

What you need:

  • Scissors
  • Tape/glue
  • A paper towel tube
  • Colored pencils/markers
  • 1-3 pieces of construction paper
  • Pre-made printable elephant template (here)

Step 1

Click to read Ellie the Elephant. Read the book with your child. Be sure to touch the illustrations to see them come to life! You can also find this book by opening your Footsteps2Brilliance App and going to Level 2 (Yellow). In the Alphabet Animals series, you'll find the book Ellie the Elephant.

Step 2

Print out the elephant template.

Decorate it and the paper tube any way you want.

If you are unable to print, you can draw your own!

Optional: Cut out the elephant.

Step 3

At one end of the paper towel tube, make 1/2 inch cuts all the way around. Make sure each cut is about the same length.

Step 4

Fold the tabs out and tape or glue the tube onto the elephant to create his trunk.

Step 5

Cut the length of the construction paper into one inch strips. Tape the ends of 2 strips together, and then tape the remaining ends together to form a ring. Two strips make one ring.

Step 6

Now you are ready to play!

Place the elephant on the floor. Stand back and try to toss the ring onto the elephant's trunk. If this is too easy, stand further back or adjust the rings to be smaller.

Have fun!
