Letter Shopping At Home!

For this week's Family Friday, we have a fun and easy activity that will help your children practice their letter names and sounds! Read one of our stories in the Mega Mouth Decoders book series in Footsteps2Brilliance, such as Betsy the Bumblebee. Children will match appropriate letter names and sounds by "shopping" around the house. Read our step-by-step guide on how you can play this interactive literacy activity with your child at home!

What you need:

  • A bag
  • Pre-made flashcards

Step 1

Open up your Footsteps2Brilliance App, and go to Level 1 (Red). Find the Mega Mouth Decoder book series in your library. For extra singing fun, you can choose the Mega Mouth Decoder songbooks!

Step 2

Print out the Mega Mouth Decoder flashcards here.

When printing at home, you can print multiple flashcards on one sheet by selecting the number of pages (flashcards) per sheet.

Step 3

Put the Mega Mouth Decoder flashcards of the books that you've read in a bag and shake it up! Have your child pick out one letter from the bag.

Have the child practice correctly saying the letter name and letter sound.

Step 4

It's time to shop! Go around the house and put whatever begins with that letter in the grocery bag.

Example: If your child chooses the letter B, you can put a banana, ball, and a book in the bag.

Step 5

Repeat the process for as many letters as you want!
