Ursula the Umbrella Cockatoo

For this week's Family Friday you will make a present for our two-legged friends: the birds! Just like Ursula in Ursula the Umbrella Cockatoo, the birds in your neighborhood need a place to live. Read our step-by-step guide on how to build your own birdhouse out of everyday items.

What you need:

  • A tissue box (or any small box/milk carton)
  • Paint and paintbrush
  • String/ribbon
  • A pen

Step 1

Click to read Ursula the Umbrella Cockatoo. Read the book with your child. Be sure to touch the illustrations to watch them come live! You can also find this book by opening your Footsteps2Brilliance App and going to Level 2 (Yellow). In the Alphabet Animals series, you'll find the book Ursula the Umbrella Cockatoo.

Step 2

Using the pen, poke 2 holes in the top of the box. Paint your box with a base coat of white paint.

After it dries, decorate it anyway you would like.

Step 3

From inside the box, thread each end of the ribbon through the holes. Then tie the ribbon so that you will be able to hang it from a branch.

Step 4

Find a nice spot in your yard or a nearby tree to hang your birdhouse. Check on it every few days to see if there are any new occupants!
